Hotel Management: Things You Need to Know Before Joining

Hotel Management is a degree course for 3-4 years that any 12th standard passout can go for. This is one of the most lucrative educational courses you can opt for in the 21st century. Hundreds of hotels are opening every week in India, which means many opportunities for students looking for a great career line.

Hotel Management Degree or Diploma

Most of the institutes like the Insitute of Hotel Management (IHM) across India provide both degrees and diplomas in this course.

A degree is a 3-4 year program and is recognised as full graduation. In this program, you will be educated and trained in all the major departments of a 5-star hotel viz... Front Office, Food & Beverage Service, Housekeeping, and Food Production. You will also be guided alongside other subjects like Nutrition, Hotel Engineering, and others depending on the college and university you chose. The most common university is the National Council of Hotel Management (NCHM) and most IHMs are affiliated with this.

There is a training program that could be from 4 months to 1 year. Here, you will have to train on the job in an actual 5-star hotel chosen by the college during the second or third year of college.

The Diploma is for 1.5 years and will train you only for a specific department you opt for. The training in this type of course is for 6 months after the first 1 year of theoretical training.

What is the difference between Hospitality Management & Hotel Management?

Although both of them are mostly used synonymously, there is some difference as you may have guessed from the names. Hotel Management exclusively trains you for only luxury 5-star hotels while in Hospitality Management, you will learn the basics (maybe advanced also) about all the related services. Things like hotels, airlines, tour operators, etc.

Hotel Management Career: What does it look like?

It’s pretty awesome if you’re truly passionate about it. Many international hotels allow you to transfer yourself anywhere in the world where the other branch of that hotel exists. You not only have an option for Hotels, but you can join as Airline Crew (air hostess) or even on a Ship (aye matey!).

Hotel Management Course Details

There are many subjects you’re taught during the 3-4 years of college. The following subjects/departments are the most important in every hotel.

Food & Beverage Service

This trains and educates you in the art of service in food and beverage outlets like Restaurants, Bars, Coffee Shops, Bistros, and Speciality Restaurants. Each outlet is led by Restaurant Manager. All the food and beverage outlet managers are headed by Food & Beverage Manager.

Front Office

This trains you in being the front face of the hotel. You will be interacting with the guests most. Reservations, check-ins, check-outs, concierge services, and problem-solving are the main tasks of this department. Although large hotels have an exclusive Reservation department. This department is led by Front Office Manager.

Accommodation/Housekeeping

In this, you’ll be training on how to manage a guest room. Your job will be to refresh it, keep it clean, refill the amenities, and much more. Many people choose this field because of the tips they can earn, as they’re also very close to guests every day. This department is led by the Housekeeping Manager.

Note: Many hotels have a large number of rooms. When that is the case, the Front Office Manager and Housekeeping Manager are both directed by the Director of Rooms.

Food Production

This is by far the most important department of the hotel. This department deals with.. well … basically the production of food in kitchens. You will be taught hundreds of recipes theoretically as well as practically in the college Kitchens. You’ll also get to eat a lot of delicious dishes. This department is led by the Executive Chef.

The other subjects you’ll be taught are:

  • Nutrition
  • Hotel Engineering
  • Food & Beverage Control
  • Computer (Basics)
  • Accounts (Basics)
  • Business Communication

In the final year of the degree, you’ll also have to prepare a project report (individual or joint) about a topic, either given by the respective professor or chosen by you. But don’t worry as the instructor will guide you at every step.

Hotel Management Joining Tips

The colleges of hotel management degrees have specific rules and regulations regarding the behaviour and presentations of their students. Although they vary from college to college, the ones below are mandatory everywhere.

  • You’re only supposed to use the English language for communication
  • You should be well dressed and presentable. A blazer is necessary
  • You are supposed to shave every day (for guys only obviously)
  • Keep your assignments ready on time, always
  • Internal Exams that are held are the most important. You won’t get second chances for this, even if you fail. Once you obtain certain marks, those are permanent and then you'll have to adjust overall pass marks in externals only (externals you can give multiple times)
  • Attendance is compulsory at a minimum of 75%, otherwise, forget to appear for exams
  • Practical exams for every important department are held alongside Internal Exams
  • Maintaining your hygiene
  • Before joining you have to submit medical certificates like Blood Group, HIV test, and others

Frequently Asked Questions about Hotel Management (FAQs)

Yes. If you want to pursue hotel management, you need to have passed out 12th class in any stream with a minimum of 60% marks.

2. Is the international institute of hotel management the same as IHM in India?

In India, IHMs train you, particularly in the ways of Indian hospitality. More focus is given to how you should treat a guest in a courteous manner, even if the guest is wrong. You can hear “Guest is always right, even when he’s wrong” in many hotels across India. The international institute of hotel management trains you more with professional courtesy. It is almost similar, but “Guest is always right” is not followed outside India.

3. What is a BHM course?

BHM stands for Bachelor of Hotel Management. It is also known by the name “B.Sc in Hospitality & Hotel Administration”.

4. How many hotel management colleges are there in India?

As of 2022, there are almost 71 Institutes of Hotel Management across India that are exclusively affiliated with NCHM. There are many other reputable institutes that provide this degree and are equivalent in status.

5. How can I join an institute of Hotel Management?

You need to appear for an NCHM Jee entrance examination. If you qualify on merit, you’ll be admitted to the college. If you didn’t qualify, then you’ll have to wait sometime. By the end of the admission period, if the college has vacant seats, they’ll allow you to join.

6. What if I failed in one subject in the first or second year?

In IHMs, if you fail one or two subjects in the first or second year, you’ll be allowed to sit in the next year, however, more than two failed subjects mean you’ll have to reappear for that year.

You have to pass the failed subjects sooner or later to get your degree. Some colleges won’t allow you to sit in the final semester examination if you have even one previously failed subject that you’ve not passed yet. You get 3 tries only. If you fail on all 3 tries, you have to repeat the entire degree program which will cost you more.

7. Do I have to pay hotel management fees in one installment?

The hotel management fee is paid via demand drafts in 6-8 installments (number of semesters). The average fees for a 6-semester program are 45k, 33k, 38k, 30k, 33k, and 40k respectively in order. However it can vary depending on the type of Institute you choose and any other facilities they provide, like Hostels.

8. How can I look for a hotel management job after completing the degree?

Almost every Institute of Hotel Management provides you with a chance to appear for campus placement. 5-star hotel managers arrive in colleges in the 5th semester for taking the interviews and every single student is given a chance to appear, regardless of their marks or subjects cleared. If you qualify for the interview, you’ll get a job right then and you have to join as soon as the degree is completed.

9. What is the salary after doing a hotel management degree?

The salary varies across the hotels, the department you chose and the skills you have. It will start small, around 15k. But the best thing about working in hotels is that your performance can give you a huge boost. In fact it won't be inaccurate to say that if you do well, in just two years, your salary can be tripled. And don't forget the tips you get.

10. What is an MT job in Hotel Management?

MT or Management Trainee is one of the best jobs a hotel could offer you in campus placements. This interview is very tough to crack and you must have a lot of knowledge, skill and confidence for the department you’ve chosen. When you qualify for this interview, you’ll join the hotel as a management trainee as compared to an employee.

The reason MT is best is that once you’ve been chosen for this, the one-year training program will be easy. You’re trained on how to manage employees and the outlet. At the end of the year, you’ll join directly as a supervisor or a manager, with a very high package than the others.
